Up early and excited to see the Grand Canyon! It is really cold outside, 27 degrees. We were getting ready to pull out when Grammie and Papa’s camping van, the "Tin Tent", wouldn’t start. They had to have it towed to Prescott, 2 hours away. It wasn’t easy to leave them at Flinstone’s Bedrock, especially since we knew that cell coverage would be limited but, we headed North to the South Entrance of The Canyon and left them to wait for their tow.
The Grand Canyon was absolutely magnificent. God’s creation is truly amazing. There was still some snow on the ground but, the weather was beautiful. We started at the visitor’s center and watched an IMAX movie about The Canyon. Then, we set out for the park ourselves.
We started at Mather Point and explored each of the Points between there and the East Entrance. We ended at The Watchtower, an observation station that was built in 1932 and looks like the American Indian towers scattered across the Southwest. They are thought to have been used for food storage or protection – the inside of the Tower is covered with pictographs and contains traditional Indian furnishings. The Watchtower is the highest point in the Canyon at 7500 ft., a perfect place to view the Canyon. What a sight!
With no cell service and no update on the van, we decided to drive the 4.5 hours South to our next stop, Apache Junction / Grammie and Papa’s home. Without knowing it, they did exactly the same thing but, in a rental car, leaving the van in Prescott to be repaired. Sometimes our best laid plans don’t work out but, we are thankful for flexible attitudes, awesome scenery and protection along the way.
